Taxi in Seoul: Uber, K.ride & Fares

Is Uber available in Seoul?

Yes. Uber's current Seoul page says its app can request a local taxi in the city. The options shown in Seoul may not be identical to the products, cars or pricing structure you know in another country, so read the vehicle label and live estimate instead of assuming the experience will be the same.

Before confirming, check the pickup pin, destination, plate number, vehicle type, payment method and any separate toll or call-fee information. A ride estimate is not a promise that a driver will always be available.

K.ride, Kakao T or Uber: which app fits a visitor?

Kakao Mobility says K.ride supports English, Japanese, Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese, with destination search and chat across many more languages. It also lists overseas-issued cards and selected digital wallets. Those are platform capabilities, not a guarantee that every card, device, account or ride request will succeed, so keep another option ready.

How to hail a Seoul taxi without an app

1. Use a taxi stand when one is nearby, or wait at a safe roadside pickup point where stopping is permitted.
2. Look for 빈차 (bincha, vacant). A taxi marked 예약 (yeyak, reserved) is already assigned.
3. Show the destination's Korean name and full road address. A nearby landmark or subway station can help.
4. Confirm that the meter is running and keep the full license plate number.
5. At the end, check the amount and ask for a receipt before leaving.

Seoul's official visitor guidance notes that many drivers are not multilingual. A Korean address is more reliable than an English business name alone. Also remember that taxi doors in Korea are normally opened and closed by the passenger.

How Seoul taxi fares are calculated

Ordinary taxi fares can combine a base meter amount with distance and low-speed time. Late-night travel, leaving Seoul, toll roads, a premium vehicle or an app call may add separate charges. Traffic therefore changes a metered trip even when the pickup and destination are the same.

Seoul's official online fare table currently displays figures effective from February 1, 2023. We do not copy that table as a “2026 price” because the page or rules may be updated. Check the official Seoul taxi fare page and the live app breakdown before travel.

• Meter fare: the running taxi charge based on the applicable tariff.
• Toll fee: a road toll should be shown separately rather than disguised as part of the meter.
• Late-night or out-of-city surcharge: confirm whether one applies to your time and route.
• Call or platform fee: read the app screen before requesting.
• Premium or larger vehicle: do not assume it uses the same tariff as an ordinary sedan taxi.

Understand the payment and receipt

For a street-hailed taxi, the official Seoul visitor guide lists cash, credit card and compatible transportation cards as possible payment methods. App rides may use in-app payment or payment in the car, depending on the option selected.

Before paying in the vehicle, check whether the app has already charged or authorized the ride. Keep the electronic or paper receipt and compare the meter fare, toll and surcharge lines. Seoul announced improved English receipts and clearer separation of meter fares and toll fees for foreign passengers in 2026.

Luggage, groups and child travel

A standard sedan may not hold several passengers plus large suitcases. Choose a vehicle category that clearly fits your group and bags, or request more than one car. A van, deluxe or premium option may use a different tariff.

If you need a child seat, wheelchair access or another specific feature, do not assume a normal taxi carries it. Confirm the exact service and booking process before travel.

Pickup and ride checklist

• Place the pickup pin on the correct side of a large road.
• Match the full license plate and vehicle before entering.
• Keep the Korean destination name and address on screen.
• Check whether the selected payment is in-app or in the car.
• Do not assume a quoted estimate includes every toll or surcharge.
• As a general travel precaution, share the plate number or live trip status with a contact.
• Take the receipt and check the back seat before closing the door.

If there is a fare or service problem

Keep the full license plate, receipt, pickup and drop-off times, route and screenshots. Seoul provides a multilingual Taxi QR Complaint System, and its Dasan Call Center (02-120) handles visitor inquiries. The city's current guidance asks passengers to retain the entire plate number when reporting a problem. For an app-booked ride, also use that platform's support channel.
